Birdseed Studios

Kind of an odd name, right?

There’s a reason for the name… But that’s not important. What is important is why we’re doing this. First off, understand that we are a small group of friends that have no grand designs on making money on this system. We’re not out to make the “next big thing” (though we’re not opposed to it…)

We have been gaming since we were teenagers, and we are all late 40’s early 50’s. We started gaming in the 1980’s and we have played just about every game out there. It is a hobby we care deeply about because it has been a large part of what has kept our relationships together relevant over these decades. Long friendships are based on shared experiences, and shared interests. Roleplaying games are a vehicle to keep both fresh and engaging.

We have slaughtered each other in Warhammer Fantasy, played countless 1st, 2nd, edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, and even 3rd, and 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons games (yes… we played 4th edition for about two weeks). We played Red Box Basic. We played Pathfinder, Palladium, Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, Vampire (Masquerade). We’ve run VLARP games with 100’s of players. We’ve run gaming conventions.

We met Gary Gygax and he wrote the foreword to our first roleplaying game book in the late 1990’s.

We play Twilight Imperium, Axis and Allies, Dune, and tons of board games.

But through it all, we’ve seen modern gaming be simple, reductionist retreads. Or worse, games have become infantilized, depending almost entirely on the guy running the game to do the heavy lifting, or just a bunch of hack and slash combat encounters. Modern games give players all the options, and power creep is off the charts.

There is either no risk (modern Dungeons and Dragons), or all risk (OSR and modern retreads of legacy games). Neither is acceptable to us. If a character death is simple and happens all the time, then there’s zero investment in the outcome. If a character can never lose, then there’s never any heroism.

This is why we’re here. To innovate. Not saying we accomplished it, but it’s what we’re here to do.
